The project is likely to be completed within two years. Once the road is completed, it is expected to ease congestion in the city.

The project was announced by the Prime Minister at the time of flagging of the Amritsar-Nankana Sahib bus service.

Earlier, Elcon, Simplex and Gammon participated in the tendering process. Elcon has quoted Rs 214 crore, Simplex Rs 195 crore, and Gammon India Rs 173 crore. As a result, Gammon got the order.

Mayor Sunil Datti said Chief Minister Amarinder Singh would lay the foundation stone within a fortnight.

The project has been cleared despite strong opposition by heritage lovers. Talking to Business Standard, Municipal Commissioner K S Kang said the elevated road would greatly ease the traffic congestion in the city.

This will be the city's first elevated road. The elevated roads will be designed to give direct access to vehicles coming from either the Wagah Border or from Delhi or Chandigarh to Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh.
