GMR Energy (GEL), the 100 per cent subsidiary of GMR Infrastructure, has deferred its plan to shift its 220 Mw barge-mounted power plant from Mangalore on the West coast to Kakinada in the East coast.

Instead, the company proposes to operate the plant from its existing location on merchant basis and accordingly the plant has started generation.

At present, the company is supplying power to Rajasthan State Electricity Board and is negotiating with various other customers for supply of power on merchant basis, the company informed Bombay Stock Exchange today.

Earlier, the company had decided to shift the barge-mounted power project to Kakinada after the Karnataka government rejected its proposal to extend the power purchase agreement beyond 7 years. The company suppled electricity to Karnataka Powere Transmission Corporation for seven year period, which ended in June this year.

GMR is the first company in the country to erect, commission and operate a barge-mounted power project anywhere in the country.
