GMR Infrastructure today said it has got approval from the Gujarat government to set up a 25 Mw solar power plant in the state.

"GMR Infrastructure (GIL) had received permission from the Gujarat state government to set up a 25 Mw solar power plant in the state," the company said in a statement.

The GMR Group has been in the business of power generation for the past 11 years.

"Green energy can help in minimising the green house gas emissions and maximising long-term development impact, apart from bringing in energy efficiency by reducing transmission and distribution loss to some extent," it added.

The company further said the proposed 25 Mw project will be powered using photo-voltaic technology, which is currently the fastest growing power-generation technology in the world.

The group has 3 operating assets with cumulative capacity of 808 Mw and has 11 projects under various stages of development totalling 8448 Mw. These projects are in the thermal, both gas and coal, and hydel mode.

GMR Group is a Bangalore headquartered global infrastructure major with interests in airports, energy, highways and urban infrastructure.

In a bid to tap solar energy for power generation, the Gujarat government is aiming at 3,000 Mw capacity of solar power generation in the next five years.
