Subir Gokarn, the former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been named the first director of research for Brookings India.
He will also serve as a Brookings Senior Fellow. Subir Gokarn had recently completed his term as a Deputy Governor of the RBI.
Subir Gokarn was Chief Economist of Standard & Poor’s Asia-Pacific from 2007-2009. He had served as Chief Economist of the rating agency CRISIL from 2002-2004, and then as its Executive Director and Chief Economist from 2004-2007.
Dr Gokarn had served as Chief Economist at the Delhi-based think tank National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) from 1999-2002. He had also taught at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) in Mumbai from 1990-2000.
Dr Gokarn is currently a member of the National Security Advisory Board of India, and a columnist with the Business Standard.
Dr Gokarn had received his Ph.D from Case Western Reserve University in the United States in 1989. He did his B.A. (Hons) in economics from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai in 1979 and his MA in economics from the Delhi School of Economics in 1981.
The Brookings India was launched in January in New Delhi to focus on policy issues related to India and the world. Brookings India is the India Centre of The Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization based in Washington, DC.
The funding, and operational activities of Brookings India will be largely done by Indians. The Brookings Institution is one of the most reputed and oldest think tanks in the world, and was consistently ranked highly in think tank ratings for years.
