With around 5000 Mw of power generation capacity in its kitty, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL), a power generation subsidiary of state-run Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL), is now looking at increasing its generation capacity in years to come. The company plans to set up a 1000 Mw greenfield power project in Mehsana.

"The Mehsana plant will be a gas-fired power project with a power generation capacity of 1000 Mw," said a senior official of the company.

The company aims to start implementation of the project in the 12th five year plan period.

Though the company has zeroed in on Mehsana for the power project, it has not yet acquired land for the plant. "Around 1000 acres of land is required for a power project of this size. We will work out further details of the project once the company acquires the land," the official added. Being a gas-based power project, the cost for the project is estimated at around Rs 3500 crore.

The company also mulls to set up 1600 Mw coal-based supercritical power project. Sinor taluka of Vadodara district and Dahej is Bharuch are on company's radar for the planned coal-based power plant.

It may be mentioned here that company has already started process to set up 800 Mw coal-based supercritical project at Wanakori in Kheda district. Last month GSECL had invited  global tenders from EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractors to construct the plant.

"We have received the bids and we will soon select the EPC player," the official added. Apart from this, bids have also been received by the company for establishment of 395 Mw gas-based power project at Dhuvaran in Anand district.

GSECL is at present implementing 500 Mw power project at Sikka, for which order has been placed to Bhel on EPC basis and it expects to commission the project by 2012.
