Guj govt to focus on engg sector: Ind commissioner

Gujarat government would be focusing on the engineering sector that provides employment to over 18 lakh people in Gujarat, Industries Commissioner B B Swain said here today.

"Gujarat contributes to over 40 per cent of the total engineering exports from India. This sector is also one of the major employment provider in the state," Swain said after inaugurating the 9th edition of the Engineering Expo here.

"The state government is focusing on engineering sector and have acquired over 900 hectares of land through the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) in Sanand," the Industries Commissioner said.

Swain said that in Sanand, where the Tata's Nano car plant is located, many industries from the automotive sector are planing to set up manufacturing units.

 

With new focus on engineering, the area around Sanand is being promoted among the engineering sector companies, he added.

The 9th edition of Engineering Expo exhibition is expected to see participation by over 250 companies, which would be the highest since launch of the exhibition in 2002.

The companies are exhibiting products under various categories that include machine tools, electrical and electronics, logistics, material handling, hydraulics, pneumatics, testing and measuring equipments, power supply and others.
