Ropes in TCS to develop tech platform

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Gujarat government has roped in Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to develop a technology platform, which will enable every police officer in the state to have access to complete police records and background information at any given time as well as access to the home ministry.

Under the project, which is in the closing stages of development, a suite of applications would enable storing, processing and securing data relating to crime records, files, orders issued, correspondence statements, bona fide police personnel records and other internal security documents.

The applications would be developed on a high-security platform accessible only to select users and implemented in phases at every police station in the state.

The project would be piloted in the coming few months and modalities regarding the same are being worked out by government officials. Once it is rolled out, officials of TCS will handhold the project at police stations and at the home ministry.

"The objective of commissioning such a project by the Gujarat government is to create a pro-active police force. The digitised platform means that police officers and top government officials will be able to have a uniform system in place across the state through which real-time access to any type of data will be made available," said Tanmoy Chakrabarty, vice-president and head global government industry group, TCS.

He added that by January 2008, TCS would be working on other innovative projects with the Gujarat government.

The company has been involved in e-development projects with the state government in the last few years like an office management system, which has inter-departmental interface, a security system, document management system and database system for government departments along with applications for government bodies like Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL).

Work on constructing the company's 2,200-seater facility at Gandhinagar, comprising applications development, software, information technology and IT-enabled services (ITeS), will start by February.

The company has also started beaming educational programmes under an initiative with the government called 'Suryodaya' to around 3,000 engineering students across 34 colleges in the state.
