Adani, Essar, Reliance, PTC India submit bids.

Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd, the apex electricity company of the state, has received a lukewarm response to its offer for supply of 2,000 MW power under competitive bidding. Out of the 19 selected power companies, only four have submitted their technical and financial bids to supply power to GUVNL on long term basis.

GUVNL today opened the technical bids submitted by power companies to supply power to state electricity company. "Out of the 19 selected companies, Reliance Power, Essar Power, Adani Group and PTC India have sent bids," said sources close to the development.

It may be mentioned here that GUVNL had invited proposals from power generators, traders and companies in August 2007 to supply 2000 mw of power to the state run company on a long term basis through competitive bidding. However, the process got delayed by more than year due to host of reasons including assembly elections in Gujarat.

The final date for submission of bids was once again extended for one month on 15 November.

GUVNL today opened technical bids, evaluation of which is likely to be completed by tomorrow evening. The state owned power company expects complete the evaluation of financial bids by 17 December.

GUVNL had selected 19 companies as qualified bidders in April this year, which included names such as Reliance Power, Torrent Power, KSK Energy, PTC India, Sanghi Group, JSW of Ratnagiri and Essar power among others.

Citing reasons for lesser number of bidders, sources said that many of the selected companies are facing fuel tie-up problems amid highly volatile prices of coal, crude and other fuels. "GUVNL had invited bids for supply of 2,000 MW of power but bids for only 1,900 MW of power have been received by the company," sources added.
