GXS, a global business-to-business e-commerce services provider, is planning to make India a major research and development (R&D) hub for the company by strengthening its R&D team through an addition to its workforce.

The company, which enables real-time flow of information between businesses regardless of standards preferences, spoken language or geographic location, is also developing and designing a majority of its products in India as most of its clients enter emerging markets including India and China.

“We have 220 people in Bangalore with 30 open positions as of now. We are planning to increase the headcount in near future,” Karl Salnoske, executive vice-president , service delivery and CIO said. India, which has historically been considered as a manpower and engineering centre, will soon emerge as a R&D hub for the company, he added.

Washington-headquartered GXS had a turnover of $350 million in 2009 and expects significant accelerated growth this year specially with their recent merger with Inovis. It has 40,000 customers including 75 per cent companies in the Fortune-500 list. In addition to the Inovis Merger, GXS has also recently acquired an Application development platform which will enable to build custom-based supply chain solutions much faster. GXS plans to completely move the development of the new platform to its India Technology Center in the next 12 months.

GXS India Technology Centre is one of the largest product development centre for the company. This centre is responsible for developing complete end-to-end solutions and products using latest internet technologies. It has representation across multiple functions including product development, quality assurance, product marketing, production services and support services.

Presently, two-third of the company’s engineering works is being done in India, while the rest is done in the US and UK.

The company, which is spending around 10 per cent of its revenue on R&D, has a long-standing relationship with Microsoft in product development, Salnoske said. He added, unlike most other global companies, GXS does complete product development in its India centre.
