Havell's India to source luminaries from China

Expects its turnover from Tamil Nadu to increase to Rs 200 cr in 3 years

Havell's India, an electrical and power distribution equipment company, plans to source luminaries from China either through an acquisition or by entering into a joint venture.

Addressing a press conference, Sandeep Sharma, assistance general manager, Havell's India Ltd, said the company recently opened an office in Shanghai and is looking at Chinese companies which will be willing to enter into a partnership with Havell's.

It will be suitable and cheaper option to source luminaries from China other than manufacturing it in India, he added.

The electrical and power distribution equipment company has joint ventures with Germany-based Geyer for manufacturing miniature circuit breaker, for wiring accessories with UK-based Crabtree and for other accessories it has tied up with UK-based Electrium. At present, Havell's has a subsidiary in UK and offices in Dubai, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

The company has 12 manufacturing plant predominantly situated in northern India. "We will be setting up a plant in Uttar Pradesh to manufacture fans and compact fluorescent lamps (CFP)," added D K Gupta, assistance general manager, Havell's India.

Gupta said that the company also expects its turnover from Tamil Nadu to increase to Rs 200 crore in the next three years from Rs 75 crore in 2004-05.

The company clocked a turnover of Rs 665 crore. Nearly half the turnover, ie about Rs 307crore, is contributed by its cable and wires segment. Gupta said that this segment was growing at a fast pace over 50 per cent annually.

Havell's India manufactures building circuit protection, industrial and domestic switchgear, cables and wires, energy meters, fans, CFL, luminaries, bath fittings and modular switches.

The company has about 1,200 dealers and 26,000 retail outlets across the country.
