Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), a part of Vedanta Resources, has increased the total capacity of its Chanderiya plant in Rajasthan from 160,000 tonne per annum to 400,000 tonne per annum (TPA).

The company has already invested over Rs 1,500 crore on the expansion project which also includes a 154 mw captive power plant, apart from the Rampura Agucha mine expansion to 3.8 million TPA of zinc ore.

The increased capacity makes HZL the sixth largest producer of zinc globally, a media statement issued by the company said.

Having become the world's largest single stream hydrometallurgical zinc smelter, HZL can now meet India's entire zinc requirements.

"Hindustan Zinc makes our country self-sufficient in zinc production while saving over $300 million annually in foreign exchange," said Anil Agarwal, chairman, Vedanta Resources.

HZL is also increasing its silver production three-fold and expanding lead capacity from 35,000 to 85,000 TPA.
