Hughes Tele Posts Rs 30.33 Crore Q1 Loss

Hughes Tele.com (India), the basic telephone service provider, has reported a net loss of Rs 30.33 crore for the quarter-ended June 30 compared with Rs 38.79 crore in the corresponding period previous fiscal.

It has however earned a cash operating profit of Rs 2.05 crore in the quarter against a cash operating loss of Rs 5.01 crore during the corresponding period in the previous year.

Total income increased by 105.84 per cent to Rs 62.93 crore from Rs 30.57 crore, while telecom service revenues shot up 82 per cent to Rs 54.52 crore from Rs 30.01 crore.

During the fiscal ended March 31, 2001, the company had reported a net loss of Rs 208.79 crore on a total income of Rs 195.02 crore.

 

Prakash Bajpai, president and CEO, said, "We are on the target to reach two lakh subscriber lines by end-March 2002."

The company continues to build its broadband fibre optic network and serves over 85,000 subscriber lines in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nasik, Nagpur, Panji (Goa), Kolhapur and Ahmednagar. Services in Sangli and Aurangabad are expected to commence shortly, the company said in a press statement.

"We expect to shortly launch our premier internet services to meet the needs of our broadband customers. With our broadband network base, our internet customers will be able to get a superior quality and faster access speeds as compared to the services currently available in the market," he added.

Hughes Tele.com is following a fibre-to-the-business (FTTB) strategy by laying fibre optic cable right up to the premises of its business customers giving them close to unlimited band width. Hughes Tele.com will shortly offer advance intelligent network services, such as calling card services, premium rate services and freephone services.

In addition of its product offerings in the conventional voice telephony services Hughes Tele.com provides a full suite of broadband services focused on communication-intensive customers. The Hughes suite of broadband digital data services includes secure Internet access, managed data network services and managed leased line services.
