FMCG major Hindustan Unilever (HUL), in a bid to address the ever-growing crisis of water scarcity, has launched an initiative that will come out with a water report in the next six months.
The report by 'India Water Body', to be released following a nation-wide survey, will access the demand-supply gap for water in India.
"We will release a report on water in the next six months. It will help public-private entities and civil society to understand the burgeoning problem and engage them to evolve a road-map providing clear priorities and solutions for implementation," HUL Executive Director (Home & Personal Care) Gopal Vithal told reporters here today.
Water management has been a key focus area at HUL. The firm has consistently reduced water consumption in its operations and is helping small farmers to use the natural resource judiciously in agriculture and also innovating and developing products and technologies that help consumers use less water, he said.
More than 75% of the manufacturing sites of HUL are zero discharge sites, Vithal said.
HUL has several products like Surf Excel that are water efficient and plans to launch similar products in the near future keeping in view that by 2030, the supply of water in India would be half of the demand for it, he said.
"By 2030, the supply of water in India would be half of the demand and this is the crisis that has the potential to derail the economic and social development. Hence, we are working towards addressing the concern with our India Water Body Initiative," HUL Managing Director and CEO Nitin Paranjpe said.
