The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad has been awarded the third best airport in the world for service quality in the 5 -15 million passengers per annum (MPPA) category by the Airport Council International.

The airport, led by Bangalore-based GMR Group, has been ranked ahead of global contenders like Abu Dhabi, Adelaide, Geneva, Cape Town, Hamburg and London Luton airports, a press release said on Sunday.

Recently, RGIA added a parallel 3,707 meter-long runway to its existing 4,260 meter-long runway. With the activation of the second runway, RGIA can now continue flight operations uninterruptedly during the regular main runway maintenance on Tuesdays.

The airport has obtained clearances from Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to make the runway operational, making it the first green-field airport in the region with two active runways, the release said.
