The upcoming Hyderabad Metro Rail will be protected with high-quality security arrangements similar to the airports, including access controlled passenger entry with baggage scanning at all its stations.

A coordination committee comprising representatives of Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerates, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMR), a government entity, overseeing the project implementation, and L&T Metrorail, the project concessionaire, was set up to finalise the security arrangements on Wednesday.

According to HMR managing director NVS Reddy, the security plan includes installation of CCTVs, sensors and alarms for monitoring of unmanned areas, checking and frisking of passengers at concourse gates, installation of intrusion detection systems, onboard surveillance through video recording in trains and anti-sabotage checking measures.

The meeting held with top police officials also discussed the security measures in parking and circulation areas, viaduct and track, trains depot areas, besides vital installations and machinery and operations of control centre, he said in a statement. The security arrangements are being finalised in consultation with Hyderabad and Cyberabad police with guidance from the Ministry of Home Affairs, according to him.

The first 8-km stretch of the Hyderabad Metro Rail is scheduled to be operational by April, 2015 while the entire project is expected to be completed in two years thereafter. L&T had started the construction of the project in 2012 with a plan to complete it in five years.
