IBM today unveiled plans for expansion of operations at its IBM India Research Laboratory, one of the eight labs of IBM Research across the globe.

As part of this expansion, IBM India Research Laboratory, New Delhi, earlier located within the IIT campus, has moved to a larger facility in the Vasant Kunj Institutional Area, New Delhi.

The new laboratory has more than double the floor space of the earlier location, better infrastructure and will provide IBM better bandwidth to address innovation needs of a larger client base worldwide. This latest expansion is in addition to an earlier opening of the lab's Bangalore site.

The expansion of IBM Research facilities in India is driven by a growth in research activities related to IBM's Software, Services and Systems businesses, as well as client collaborations in India.

"IBM Research has been in India for about 10 years, and we are committed to innovation that matters, for our company and for the world. This is evident from the fact that no other company has the resources committed to innovation than IBM does - $5 to 6 billion a year invested in R & D," said Dr. Dan Dias, Director, IBM India Research Laboratory.

Recently, IBM committed $100 million over the next two years to explore potential applications of a number of exciting new technologies ranging from portable, electronic health records and blackout-proof electricity grids to 3-D virtual worlds in which consumers can play games and businesses can hold meetings and collaborate with partners.
