Idea Cellular today launched third generation (3G) services in Delhi on 900 Mhz band with the support of 2,500 3G cell sites and 5,000 upgraded 2G cell sites. The company said it will soon launch better quality 3G services in Kolkata.
"With the launch in Delhi and the impending launch in Kolkata metro, Idea will now have its own 3G network in 13 circles which contribute to nearly 80% of the company's revenue and 60% of industry revenue," Idea said in a statement.
Though the Mumbai-headquartered firm had launched 3G on 900 Mhz band in Delhi in March this year, it was offering the speedy internet service with the support of 2G cell sites, which were not capable enough to transmit high-speed downloads.
Idea has over 6 million subscribers in Delhi with approximately 30% being Data users.
With the new upgraded 3G network, Idea customers are to experience a jam-free network that offers better voice and data experience, said Sanjeev Govil, Chief Operating Officer (Delhi), Idea Cellular.
While most telecom operators are offering internet services over higher frequencies such as 1800 Mhz and 2100 Mhz band, so far Idea has joined only Airtel to offer internet services in lower frequencies such as 900 Mhz. While high frequency bands are good enough to carry data at high speed, lower frequency band can penetrate concrete walls and therefore provide good connectivity in indoor areas.
Over the last two years, Idea has invested heavily in acquiring spectrum in the 900 MHz band and has announced to spend nearly Rs 6500 crore this fiscal to set up a better, upgraded network, the company said.
