State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) today announced free incoming calls from all its networks to subscribers to CellOne, its cellular phone service, with immediate effect.

This follows an order by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to make all incoming calls to cellphones free from April 1.

BSNL has also sought Trai approval for slashing long-distance tariffs for fixed-line users by an undisclosed amount.

With effect from April 1, BSNL also announced several value-added services including allowing its fixed-line subscribers to access the Internet and receive video-on-demand on their telephone cable.

Fixed-line users will also get the benefit of short messaging services (on specialised phones), interactive voice response services and caller identification-based Internet services.

Free incoming will be available to all CellOne subscribers on pre-paid cards and those on Plan 325 (that is, those who pay a monthly rental of Rs 325).

Hitherto, only Plan 325 subscribers enjoyed free incoming calls and that too only if the calls were from BSNL
