In a bid to push the sale of gold coins during this year's festive season, India Post has launched a novel scheme, offering 0.5 gram of gold free on purchase of 10 gram of gold coin from the post offices.

The offer was launched from Tuesday and will be continued till the end of December this year.

Besides, the six per cent discount offer on the total value of gold, which was scheduled to end on October 9, has been extended to boost sales.

The free gold coin, however, would not be given to those customers who have opted for discount on the purchase of gold, official sources said. India Post is selling the 24-carat gold coins in select post offices in its Orissa circle including Berhampur, in south Orissa.

The post offices are selling gold coins of different denominations including 0.5 gram, one gram, five gram and eight grams from their counter. Recently, one more coin, weighing 20 gram, has been added to the portfolio.

These gold coins are manufactured by Valcambi-Switzerland and are 99.99 per cent pure.

With this festive offer, we hope more number of customers will come forward to purchase gold from the post office, the Post Master General (PMG) of Berhampur region S K Kamila told Business Standard here on Wednesday.
