Indore glassware firms gain ground

Indore-based glassware firms are competing with national and international brands.Glasswares designed by Indore-designers are being appreciated by South Africa.

In Indore, glasswares' designer job generates around Rs 1 crore annually and it is increasing by 30 per cent. At present, seven or eight skilled trading persons have been carrying out this job in the city.

The first lady designer of the city, Urvashi Bhushan, disclosed that currently Rs 4 lakh coloured glasswares have been exported to South Africa. Earlier, coloured glasswares worth Rs 2.5 were exported to Dubai.

Latest technology in colour designing is expected to be imported from China. The job of colour designing is also being done on glass bricks. Urvashi revealed that the glassware colour designing was started in the city ten years ago.

Sameer Govindwala, who has been trading in glassware for the last five years, opined that the glasswares will be demanded more in the construction works.

It has a potential to generate employment. Its designs will be advertised on the internet and marketing will also be conducted through online trading.

The new technology would benefit the customers, too. The technology to toughen glass locally has been developed in the city to deliver the goods at a cheaper rate. The government has also given due priority to the product.

Now glasswork can worked up to the length of 14 ft whereas it was not possible to make glass design in more than 8 ft earlier. The improvement has also occurred in thickness which ranges between 2 mm and 19 mm now.

The design is made easy with the help of computers and plotter (a special type of printing device).
