GAIL India, the country's largest natural gas transmission, distribution, marketing and processing company and Infosys Technologies announced here on Tuesday they will work together to develop information technology solutions for retail gas and LPG business.

A memorandum of understanding was signed by the companies aimed at the development and commercialisation of software to manage the retail natural gas business across GAIL's distributors and retailers worldwide, according to a press release.

With the agreement, GAIL will bring along business insights and domain knowledge while Infosys will work on putting the solution in place. The initiative will include development of IT solutions for system safety management, system integrity management and customer services.

The two companies will also jointly impart training to clients for using the software and other services. A joint working group will be put in place in a month's time by the companies to work out the modalities of creating a software solution for the retail markets.

The agreement restricts the software solution to GAIL customers alone. Infosys did not comment on whether the jointly developed solution could be marketed outside GAIL's limits. Details were unavailable on the particulars of the agreement including whether it would be a revenue sharing one.

Proshanto Banerjee, x, GAIL said, "We are pleased to partner Infosys because of their expertise in building software solutions and their execution excellence. The synergies between the two companies will help create business solutions that address the pain points of our customers globally."
