InterfaceFlor, a modular flooring division of Interface Inc, has said that it has decided to be the world's first environmentally self-sustainable company in the sector by 2020.
Defined as 'Mission Zero', the company has decided to cut down on the environmental non-friendly practises, including procurement of raw material.
The company's Country Manager Raj Menon said that they are half way through to achieve the goal.
"The company has chalked out seven fronts on which it will be working," Menon told reporters in Panaji.
The firm wants to cut down waste and harmful emissions, maximise use of renewable energy, recycle waste materials and reuse products, develop resources efficient transportation methods, create culture that integrates the principles of sustainability into working lives and form new models for businesses.
The company with its headquarters at Atlanta in the US claims itself to be "the worldwide leader in the production of environmentally responsible modular floor coverings."
Menon said that they have manufacturing facilities at the US, Thailand, Australia, England, Ireland and Netherlands and its product is sold in more than 110 countries.
"There is 80 per cent reduction in the waste from manufacturing facility to landfill since 1996. Also from the same year onwards, there is 80 per cent reduction in global water usage," Menon said.
The company also has 36 per cent of its raw material which is recycled or bio-based material.
"We have also realised savings of more than $433 million globally by avoiding waste costs. This proves that sustainability is not only good for environment but also for business," Menon added.
