The three-day international seminar on “Advances in Analytical Techniques and Characterisation of Materials” concluded in the state capital here recently emphasised on the need for basic research in the development of high performance and high quality steel..
The conference was organised at the Research and development Centre for Irion & Steel (RDCIS), SAIL, in association with the Indian Institute of Metals, Ranchi chapter and TMS.
On the concluding day, two technical sessions and a valedictory session were organised. .Dr Ram K. Iyenger, noted technocrat and advisor, SAIL, was the chief guest of the panel discussion and valedictory session.
Prof. I P Jones, University of Birmingham and Prof. Subramanian, McMaster University also spoke on the technical aspects in the steel sector.
A.S Mathur, chairman of the organising committee and executive director in-chage, RDCIS, discussed the salient feature of the conference.
Dr, Iyengar advised Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) to produce high quality API grade steel with online micro-structural control. Dr. Subramanian said that R&D had a vital role in the steel industries to remain competitive.

In the technical sessions, ten technical papers in two sessions, namely corrosion and surface degradation and failure analysis were presented by eminent speakers from steel plants and reputed technical institutes.
Prof. S N Ojha, IT BHU, Varanasi and R Punch, University of Birmingham read the keynote address during the two sessions.
More than 250 participants attended the conference from various academic institutions, steel producers and equipment manufacturers.
