ITC Ltd is investing Rs 227 crore in its pulp mill modernisation and upgradation project at Bhadrachalam to manufacture elemental chlorine free (ECF) paper.

ITC has thus become the first company in India to have implemented this technology, in line with international environmental norms.

This technology conforms to food grade norm of US Food and Drugs Authority for packaging edibles and medicines.

The food, pharma and personal care products industry, where hygiene is important, are the first few industries to shift to the environment friendly technology. Some of the first few users of elemental chlorine-free paperboard include Tetrapak, Amul and other ice-cream manufacturers.

Announcing this development, Pradeep Dhobale, chief executive, ITC
