The Telangana government today said multi-business conglomerate ITC Limited was planning to expand its operations in the state across hospitality, food and paper sectors.

Talking to the media on the sidelines of a packaging industry summit here, IT and Panchayat Raj minister KT Rama Rao said the government had extended all approvals for a second five star hotel - ITC Kohinoor - being set up by the company at an investment of Rs 700 crore. The project is coming up in the IT hub Madhapur, here according to him.

"Within three months of the formation of the new government, we had given all the necessary approvals the company was awaiting for the past three years for this project," he said.

ITC officials had already held discussions with chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on developing a large food park near Hyderabad, possibly in the chief minister's home constituency Gajwel, according to the minister. A company like ITC anchoring a food processing park in Telangana will go a long way in developing this sector, he added.

ITC Limited had already announced the expansion of its paper manufacturing operations at Bhadrachalam in the state at an investment of Rs 3,000 crore. The state government had promised to provide land and other approvals for the same.

Rao said the food processing would give a boost to the packaging industry in the state. He asked the industry to look for ways to use the recycled material in packaging so that the waste could be used to generate value, besides addressing environmental concerns.
