Global pharmaceuticals and consumer packaged goods manufacturer Johnson and Johnson (J&J) is setting up its largest manufacturing plant in India in Telangana.
The foundation stone for the proposed plant, coming up on 47 acre in Mahabubnagar district, was laid by Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday.
“We will be investing Rs 400 crore in Phase-1 of the project. Upon its commissioning by the end of 2016, it will create direct and indirect jobs to 1,500,” Vikas Srivastava, managing director (India consumer business), J&J, told mediapersons.

Phase-1 will have an annual capacity to manufacture 1,800 tonne hygiene products like Clean & Clear facewash and babycare products, focusing on the domestic market, he said.
“The idea behind setting up this plant is to be close to south India, our largest market, which contributes 30-40 per cent to our India business,” Srivastava said, adding they would explore opportunities to expand further post the completion of Phase-1.
