The Jharkhand government has today decided to take back the land, given to Hindustan Copper's (HCL) Ghatsila unit, for not paying dues worth Rs 64.15 crore, state Land Reforms Minister Mathura Mahato said.
"The government has decided to take back 1,079 acres land, which was given to HCL about five decades ago. The company's unit has also been shut down," Mahato told reporters here.
"The company owes Rs 56.15 crore towards electricity dues and Rs 8 crore towards water tax," Mahto added.
HCL's unit, the Indian Copper Company, had seven copper mines at Bedia, Musabani and Rakha in East Singhbhum's Ghatsila sub-division before all the mines closed one after the other.
They have reportedly outsourced a company to work in some of its mines, as efforts were on to reopen them. Company officials could not be reached for their comments.
