JB Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals has entered into a non-exclusive license agreement with Gilead Sciences, to manufacture and distribute generic versions of Tenofovir in 95 countries including India. The drug is sold by Gilead under the brand name Viread.

According to the release issued by JB Chemicals to the BSE, Tenofovir is an anti retroviral drug, which is found to be useful in the cases who are resistant to other anti-retroviral agents. The drug has also been indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults.

The JB Chemicals will pay a royalty on net sales of the finished product to Gilead, the release added.

Matrix Laboratories has also signed a licensing agreement with Gilead on September 22, 2006 for the manufacture and sale of a generic version of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate using Gilead
