Jet Airways would reconfigure its five Boeing 777s, adding 36 economy seats in each aircraft, Vice-President (Investor Relations) K G Vishwanath told equity analysts on Monday. The move would enable the airline to increase its capacity without adding planes and help it compete better with international carriers.
The Boeing 777s are flown on busy London and Hong Kong routes. The planes have eight first class seats, 30 business class seats and 274 in economy. The airline has three rows of three seats each in economy (3+3+3) but now would add fourth seat in the middle row. This would lead to an increase in overall seating seat capacity from existing 312 to 348 seats. Jet Airways has a fleet of 10 Boeing 777s but has leased five of them to Thai Airways.
