The 540-Mw captive power plant of Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) in Dongamauha of Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh had become fully operational.

The plant has four units of 135-Mw each. The fourth and final unit was switched on by Savitri Devi Jindal, the Chairperson Emeritus of JSPL in Raigarh on Monday, a press statement issued by the company here Tuesday said. With this, the 540-Mw plant to be known as Dongamauha captive power plant (DCPP) had become operational.

"The JSPL had registered another feat in the field of power production with the start of new captive power plant," the statement said. The captive power plant would feed the JSPL's steel facility located in Raigarh.

The 3-MTPA Raigarh steel plant of JSPL is the world's largest coal-based sponge iron manufacturing facility with state-of-the-art machinery. The company is planning to increase the production of steel from 3-MTPA to 10-MTPA in phases.

The JSPL plant had an installed 353-MW Captive Power Plant (CPP) at Raigarh. With the Dongamauha plant becoming fully operational, the captive power capacity of the JSPL had now enhanced to 850-Mw. However, the company is planning to shut down the small captive unit that had not been viable.

A senior executive of the company said that there were about a dozen small captive units at part of the 353-Mw plant.
