Capacity utilisation at Karnataka unit to stay low until end-Sep

JSW Steel Ltd produced 9,91,000 tonne of crude steel in July, up 47% from last year from its three manufacturing units at Vijayanagar, Salem and Dolvi, the company said in a notification to the BSE today.

In the period under review, the company’s production of flat rolled products was up 64% year on year while that of long products rose 31%.

The Mumbai-based primary steel producer’s flat steel production stood at 7,96,000 tonne, while that of long steel products was at 186,000 tonne.

Flat steel products are mainly used in the auto industry, while long products find wide application in the construction sector.

At its 10-mln-tonne steel plant at Vijayanagar in the state of Karnataka, the company said its capacity utilisation was lower in July due to shutdown of one of its corex furnaces for relining and capacity enhancement.

This furnace will commence production by end of September, said the company.

The capacity utilisation of the Vijayanagar plant has been between 75-80% since the last few quarters.

JSW Steel is currently in discussion with its clients to raise product prices of all its flat products and some of its long products due to the relentless fall in rupee against the dollar and also because of rise in global flat steel products.

The decision on the quantum of product price hike will happen this week, a source close to the development told Business Standard today.
