Has capacity of 24,000 tonnes per annum

Jubilant Lifesciences, an integrated pharma and lifesciences company, is setting up a manufacturing plant for Symtet with a capacity of 24,000 tonnes per annum and another one for chlorinated pyridine derivatives at its Bharuch special economic zone.

The chlorinated pyridine plant would have a capacity of 5,000 tonne per annum. Symtet, also known as 2,3,5,6-Tetra Chloro Pyridine, is used in the manufacturing of Chlorpyrifos, one of the world’s largest and safest, low cost Insecticide that is clocking a growth of seven per cent globally. "This facility is expected to be operational from Q4 F12 and will make Jubilant the largest producer of Symtet globally, catering to more than 40% of the worldwide demand.", the company said in a statement today.

The company has already received approvals from major customers and is in the process of firming up longterm arrangements with them. It expects to achieve additional annual revenue of $90 million from this facility.

Jubilant has developed this niche technology using Pyridine, its captive raw material, for manufacturing Symtet through much cleaner and environment friendly process compared to the alternate route using ‘Trichloro Acetyl Chloride’ (TCAC), the company claimed.

Commenting on the development, Hari S Bhartia, co-chairman & managing director, Jubilant Life Sciences Ltd, said, "Jubilant will be the only company in the world manufacturing Symtet through this environment friendly technology, developed by in-house R&D having complete backward integration upto the basic feed stock. Through this technology Jubilant has identified additional use of Pyridine. It will provide an innovative solution to its customers by providing a penultimate intermediate using single step chemistry leading to a better quality agrochemical product with higher yield. "

Jubilant Life Sciences is the largest Custom Research and Manufacturing Services (CRAMS) player and a leading Drug Discovery and Development Solution (DDDS) provider out of India.

The company has already set up two 10,000-tonne per annum (tpa) units each to make Niacinamide and 3-Cyanopyridine at its upcoming special economic zone (SEZ) at Bharuch in Gujarat.

The company’s customer base is spread across 65 countries that include pharmaceutical, life sciences and agro-chemical companies. Its key markets are in North America, Europe and China.
