Kaiga Unit-1 reopened

The Unit-1 of the Kaiga Atomic Power Station, which was shut down since October 20, 2009 for biennial maintenance work, has been made operational on Thursday. The Kaiga Generating Station has four units of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors each of 220 MWe capacity at Kaiga. Units-2 and 3 are operating normal and Unit-4 is being commissioned later this year.

According to KAPS officials, the biennial shutdown activities of Kaiga Unit-1 have been successfully completed. All the plant systems have been tested and found normal. Reactor is started back and the startup tests are being performed by raising the reactor power gradually, KGS Unit-1 is expected to be synchronised to the grid by Thursday night, a release said, a press note issued by the Kaiga Station director J P Gupta said.
