Dismissing the popular perception of being an industrial graveyard, Kanpur emerged as the top ranked city across Uttar Pradesh in terms of industrial growth rate, a report by Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) has said. The city is ranked marginally ahead of the much celebrated Noida, which has reported a growth of 14 per cent compared to Kanpur’s 15 per cent.
The number of industrial units in the city was at its lowest in 1998, numbering 14,222,. The figure doubled to 28,872 by 2010.
The results indicate unrealized industrial potential of Kanpur, which has largely suffered at the hands of poor infrastructure and bureaucratic red tape, Regional MSME director H P Jaiswal said. “The proposed cluster approach for sector specific SMEs will further boost the outlook.”
Gautam Buddh Nagar and Meerut were ranked third and fourth, respectively.
