Buoyed by the success of Bharti Airtel to acquire African assets of Zain, Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today said more Indian companies should follow suit.

"After some false start they (Bharti Airtel) have finally been successful and made it big time. I ... hope that other Indian companies will follow," he told reporters here while commenting on the $10.7 billion telecom deal.

"It is good that Indian companies now have the confidence to go and strike the globe and take Indian footprints across the globe. Here is one more Indian company that has done it," Khurshid said.

Commenting on the deal, Revenue Secretary Sunil Mitra said, "I am proud India is going out and doing great things in the world sphere. I am proud as an Indian."

In one of the biggest deals in the telecom sector, Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel last evening acquired the African assets of Zain to become the fifth biggest wireless company in the world.
