KOEL, Rolls-Royce ink pact to supply gensets for nuclear plants

Pune based engine and genset manufacturer Kirloskar Oil Engines and UK based power systems provider Rolls-Royce has inked an agreement for exclusive cooperation on the building and commissioning of emergency gensets for nuclear power plants in India.

As per the declaration, Rolls-Royce will supply MTU engines and key components, and take responsibility for basic engineering and genset configuration. KOEL, as a main contractor to Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), will integrate the systems and assemble and test the gensets on site in India.

“Working together with KOEL, we see good chances of gaining entry into the emergency genset market for nuclear power stations in India,” said Michael Haidinger, CSO, Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
 

According to Rolls Royce,  India is putting its focus on nuclear power to help meet its long-term energy requirements. By 2050, nuclear power is to cover one quarter of India's power requirement.

"This cooperation is enabling us to pool our own experience and expertise as a local supplier with the technological leadership of MTU in the area of NPP emergency gensets,” said Rajendra R. Deshpande, executive director of Kirloskar Oil Engines, during his visit to Friedrichshafen.

KOEL has already delivered 20 emergency gensets to nuclear power plants in India and is the only Indian company supplying high capacity gensets to NPCIL. MTU has successfully completed numerous projects in the field of nuclear power and its emergency gensets operate in several nuclear power plants in Europe, China and Russia. MTU India with its integrated facility in Pune and through its distribution network provides sales & support to applications across Industrial, power generation, marine and defence.

The market size of Indian genset is of Rs 3,000 crore and it is growing due to increased demands and shortage of power supply. The company manufactures the gensets at their Kagal plant near Kolhapur. The company has recorded revenue of Rs 900 crore in the last financial year.

KOEL has invested Rs 100 crore to revise the Central Pollution Control Board's (Ministry of Environment & Forests) revised norms CPCB-II. It is spending Rs 25 crore for expanding dealerships and online distribution. It is delivered more than 2,000 gensets in the market complying with the new emission guidelines.

KOEL already has its exports presence in the market of Middle East, South Africa, US, Nigeria and Indonesia.

Currently, its export business contributes Rs 200 crore form Middle East and South East Asia. It contributes KOEL's 30 per cent of overall business, It has presence in segments of diesel engines, agricultural pump sets and generating sets. The  power gensets contribute 50 per cent to the firms revenue.

Globally, KOEL competes with other genset players like APR Energy Plc., Broadcrown Ltd., Caterpillar Inc., Cummins Inc, Dresser-Rand Group Inc and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
