Korean Scholarship Programme For It Students

The Korean government has introduced a Sponsorship Programme for foreign Information Technology students this year in a bid to strengthen international co-operation between universities.

The effort, according to the organisation is aimed at stimulating international co-operation in the field of IT-related research, support and exchange of brainpower, facilitate globalisation of related industries.

A delegation of Korean IT specialists comprising six goverment officials and university professors will visit India this month to present the scholarship programme.

Aimed at encouraging IT students to pursue tertiary studies in Korea, the delegation will address the students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Indian Institute of Technology.

 

The scholarship awards would pay around $ 8,000 every year to masters degree programme candidates for a maximum of two years.

While doctorate students would get up to $ 12,000 annual scholarship for a maximum of four years.

According to the officials the scholarship would take care of tuition fee incurred at Korean universities.

Students below 35 years holding a bachelors degree in IT can apply for the scholarship programme. In addition he would also require a TOEFL score of 550 to qualify for the same.

The Korean government plans to select atleast 50 students for the 2003 academic year for the award.

Although no statutory quota has been assigned for specific countries, students hailing from a single country should not exceed 40 per cent of the entire number of scholars selected.

The sponsorship is open to all disciplines related to IT science and engineering, including computer systems, software and telecommunications.
