Krishnapatnam Port Company Ltd (KPCL) has signed an agreement with Container Corporation of India (Concor) for movement of container traffic from the east coast port in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh to the hinterland.

Concor, a mini-ratna PSU under the railways ministry, is the largest player in inland container rail freight business, and operates 200 high-speed container rakes.

As part of the agreement, the two companies would jointly develop the required rail infrastructure to cater to the expected jump in traffic, once the container terminal at the port becomes operational at the end of July.

The deal is expected to contribute revenues to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore by 2015-16.

The container terminal with a capacity of 1 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) has two berths with a draft of 13.5m, while its planned capacity is 3 million TEUs.

The two companies would also develop container freight station at the port and inland container depots in the hinterland. KPCL said in a release that they would also explore various opportunities to service container and exim-related trade.
