KSK Energy Ventures Limited, a Hyderabad-based power project development company, on Monday announced the commencement of operations at the first of its four 135-Mw units that constitute the 540-Mw Wardha Warora coal-fired project in Maharashtra.

The project is undertaken through a special purpose vehicle – Wardha Power Company Limited (WPCL) – and has a coal linkage from Western Coalfields Limited. WPCL has commenced the testing of the power plant parameters, post-synchronisation with the grid and based on the coal procured from Western Coalfields.

With this, the aggregate installed generation capacity of KSK has increased from 279 Mw (as of March 2010) to 414 Mw, it said in a filing to the BSE. KSK said the entire power generated from the first two units of 135-Mw each would be supplied to Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company under a short-term power purchase agreement. WPCL recently received a letter of intent from a large distribution licence in Maharashtra for firm procurement of power in excess of 290 Mw for the April 2011-March 2014 period.
