Engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has expressed interest in setting up a super-critical thermal power plant in West Bengal.

A team of L&T officials today met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Power Minister Manish Gupta to discuss the possibility of putting up a power plant in the state.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, L&T VP and Head (Corporate Initiatives) Shailendra Roy said the company wanted to set up 2X800 MW super critical power plant.

The official said the plant would be constructed, erected and run by L&T, adding that the investment would be Rs 11,000 crore.

He said 1,200 acres would be required and will have to be provided by the state government. "We will not acquire land on our own." He added that the site should have adequate water supply, coal linkages and rail-head.

Roy said the state government had given three land options, the names which he refused to divulge.

"We will take 10-15 days and then give a detailed study report to the state government," he said.

To a query, Roy said L&T was also open to a joint-venture arrangement with the state.

The company would sign a power purchase agreement (PPA) in line with West Bengal's buying rate of power.
