Engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) said here today that commercial operations of its first 700 MW unit of the 1400 MW supercritical thermal power plant at Rajpura in Punjab has begun.
"L&T Power has successfully completed commissioning and testing of the first unit of its 2x700 MW supercritical thermal power plant of Nabha Power on January 31," the company said in a statement.
"We have demonstrated our capability as a leading power plant engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) player, with the successful commissioning of the first unit of the Rajpura plant," Member of the L&T Board Shailendra Roy L&T said.

Commercial operations of the plant are likely to augment Punjab's generation capacity significantly, making the state power surplus, and enabling it to export power to the national grid, he said.
The plant was constructed on a turnkey basis by L&T Power, with more than 90% of the equipment sourced from group companies of L&T, the release said.
The supercritical boiler and turbine were manufactured by L&T's joint venture companies with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) located at Hazira, Gujarat, it said.
