L&T's proposed shipyard to come up in 18 months

Larsen & Toubro's (L&T) proposed integrated ship building yard at Ennore, Tamil Nadu, would be ready in 18 months, a top company official said today.

The project would come up at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore, K Venkataramanan, president (operations), L&T, told PTI here.

L&T has announced plans to build large tonnage ships at the facility.

Venkataramanan was here to deliver the keynote address at the two-day annual convention of the Baroda Management Association (BMA). The theme of the convention is 'Managing in times of Uncertainties'.

He said the diversified conglomerate, whose activities range from shipping to software, is geared up to the meet the challenges arising out of the global economic meltdown.

 

The company is going to execute several projects, giving employment to many people, he said.

"L&T is aiming to be second BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals)," he said, referring to the public sector company, the largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise in the country in the energy-related/infrastructure sector.

He said L&T is slowly shifting its activities in southern India.
