In the wake of workers of Apollo Tyres Ltd's plant at Waghodia near Vadodara threatening to go on an indefinite strike, the Gujarat government's labour department has called a meeting of the striking workers, the company management and representatives of Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh (BMS) today at labour department's office in Vadodara.

"We are meeting the Apollo Tyres management and the striking workers along with the Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh representatives at labour department's office in Vadodara. While there is no set agenda, we will hear both the point of views and offer necessary suggestion. However, I believe the workers should not go on strike and should wait for some time," said K O Shah, deputy labour commissioner, labour department, government of Gujarat.

Around 7,000 workers at the manufacturing plant of Apollo Tyres at Limda Village in Waghodia have threatened to go on indefinite strike if the company management does not recognise the new union as well as does not retract suspension of two employees. As many as 1,500 workers of the company have already stopped going to work since Tuesday last week.

It may be mentioned here that corporate companies such as General Motors, Arvind Ltd, Reliance Industries and Hitachi Home and Life Solutions (India) Ltd have witnessed workers' strikes in Gujarat over the last one and a half year.
