Lanco Solar Energy has bagged a prestigious contract for setting up a solar power project at Parliament House.

Five companies, including Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries (Solar Group), Punj Llyod and Wipro Ecoenergy, were vying for the solar power project.

"We have allotted the solar energy project to Lanco Solar Energy as it was the lowest bidder among all bidders by quoting Rs 1.29 crore for the project to be set up in Parliament," a senior official of the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), which was asked by the Centre to implement the project, told PTI here.

The project is expected to be completed within the next five months, he said.

PEDA had invited bids for commissioning a power project with a capacity of 80 KW using solar photovoltaic technology and its operation and maintenance for 10 years.

"Out of 80 KW of power generation, 50 KW of power will be fed into a grid system and rest will be used for illumination," he said.

The Centre had allocated the Parliament House solar power project over four months ago to PEDA, keeping in view its expertise in non-conventional and renewable energy resources.

"The main objective of this project is to demonstrate and popularise renewable and new energy resources for power generation and it has been awarded under the Special Area Demonstration Programme of the government," the PEDA official said.

State-owned PEDA is a nodal agency for promotion and development of renewable energy projects in Punjab, including solar, biogas and small hydel projects. It is also the nodal agency for facilitating Clean Development Mechanism projects.
