Larsen & Toubro has secured Rs 5100 crore order for design, construction and commissioning of 1320 MW thermal power plant of Madhya Pradesh Power Generation company.
The project order covers design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of two coal-fired thermal units of 660 MW each with supercritical parameters. While the bids were finalised last year the award was not announced till now because of delays in securing environment clearance to the coal mine which will fuel the power plant in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. This is a repeat order for the company which had executed phase I of the project.
"This is a turnkey project and we will be constructing boilers and turbines for the plant at our Hazira unit which is run in joint venture with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems. We see movement on ground in power sector and will participate in bids for 6000 MW power plants in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashta. The outlook is improving and government is looking at giving clearances to power plants on a priority,'' said Shailendra Roy, whole time director (power, metals and minerals) of Larsen & Toubro.
L&T' power business has been facing competition on one hand from Chinese and Korean suppliers and delays and facing impact due to delays in projects clearances.
In a press statement the company said it won the order through tough competitive bidding. The project demands stringent completion schedule of 43/47 months for each of the units. "The awarding of the power project affirms L&T's credentials in EPC execution of power plants under critical schedules", he added.
