Mahindra Powerol, the power generator manufacturing division of Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, is aiming to become one of the top three players in the home UPS segment, once it will have pan-India presence by 2014.

The home UPS market in India is around 4.5 million units worth Rs 2,000 crore, which is growing at 10-12 per cent year-on-year. The market is dominated by organised players like Microtek and Luminous.

“Mahindra Powerol floated its UPS division in February 2010, and grew substantially in the last two years,” said Mahindra Powerol head (HUPS business) Narendra Goyal.

Unveiling the company’s new higher-range home UPS models from 2.5 KVA (kilovolt ampere) to 5KVA, and an inverter battery in the Hyderabad market on Wednesday, P Palaniappan, senior vice-president (business head), said, “Our plan is to consolidate our operations in the six states – Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Bihar – before coming up with a revenue model. We are also planning to expand our distribution network to 7,000 selling counters, from the current 3,500 this fiscal.”

The company, which caters to the telecom battery, diesel generators, inverters and the home UPS segment, will also venture into the solar-based inverter segment. It has already partnered four companies, including Mahindra Solar, for technology development, Goyal said.

Currently, it has four series of inverters – Eco, Eco-plus, Hi-speed and Intelli, and the newly-launched inverters will be priced between Rs 20,000 and Rs 35,000.
