With a spurt in demand from overseas for Indian cuisines like saag, rajmah and kurhi pakora, Punjab government-owned Markfed aims to achieve Rs 10-12 crore export turnover from canned food this fiscal.

Earlier, Markfed used to export canned food items mainly to the West Asia (about 50 per cent of total export), apart from the European market.

But in the last one year demand from countries like Australia too has increased a lot, Markfed Cannery unit sources said here.

Last year, Markfed exported Rs 8 crore worth of canned food, while this year it is expected to rise to Rs 10-12 crore, they added.

Some new products, including pickles and murabbas have been launched and export orders for these also have started pouring in, they said.

In the near future, apart from canned packing, pouch packs of the processed vegetables would also be launched for easy transportation, they added.
