Global payment firm MasterCard has roped in Citigroup's Ajay Banga as President and Chief Operating Officer of the company.

Banga, who is currently Citigroup's Chief Executive Officer (Asia Pacific), would join MasterCard on August 31 and would report to Robert W Selander, Chief Executive Officer, MasterCard said in a statement.

"This is clearly a wonderful opportunity to join a company at the forefront of advancing global commerce," Banga said in a statement.

He would be responsible for business operations including customer relationships globally and US markets, products, services, marketing, technology and operations, it said.

"I am very pleased to have Ajay join our senior executive team and partner with me to grow MasterCard's value to our customers, merchants, consumers and investors," Selander said.

The 49-year-old Banga had joined Citi in 1996 as Head of Marketing and Sales in India. Prior to this, he was with Nestle India and PepsiCo.
