Luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz India plans to increase its headcount at the research & development centre in Bangalore by up to four-fold in the next few years and will invest Rs 150 crore together with its partners for expanding its distribution network in the country.

“We will have between 500 and 1,000 engineers working for our R&D centre in Bangalore in the next few years. We currently have about 200-220 people at the centre,” Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Wilfried Aulbur told reporters here today.

However, he declined to give a specific timeline for increasing the number of staff at the centre or the investment. Mercedes-Benz globally spends about 4-5 per cent of its revenue on R&D.
