The motorcycle segment in the country, which registered a spectacular 37 per cent growth during 2001-02 in the face of an overall industrial decline, is likely to see a major slow down in growth before it plateaus.
Top industry players feel growth in the motorcycles market will slow down to 15-20 per cent, or less, and total sales could stabilise at around 3.5 million units per annum. Motorcycle sales, which currently account for around 68 per cent of the domestic two-wheeler market, are expected to touch 2.9 million units by the end of March, more than double the sales of 1.4 million units during 1998-99.
